We the People Wednesdays Action for March 11, 2026

ACTION 1:  (Go to wethepeopleweds.org and click Today’s Action in upper left)

The Justice Department proposed a new rule last week to block state bars from investigating and punishing DOJ lawyers accused of violating state ethics requirements. Under this rule, Attorney General Pam Bondi could freeze state bars’ probes until the department has undertaken its own independent review of any allegations—a black-box process that could stretch on extensively. Wielding this new power, Bondi could essentially quash any state investigations into ethics violations by DOJ lawyers, including accusations that these front-line attorneys lied in court, by allowing “reviews” that might last indefinitely. If upheld, the rule would bail out the many, many DOJ lawyers who allegedly breached their ethical obligations in defending the Trump administration.

Before it can take effect, the rule must go through a public comment process. Anyone can submit a comment by April 6 registering their opinion on the rule. DOJ is required to consider and respond to the comments submitted. They may not prevent the rule from taking effect, but they will be part of the official record when the rule is (inevitably) challenged in court.

I am a concerned citizen who cares deeply about preserving the rule of law and upholding the integrity of our justice system. I strongly oppose this new rule, because it will diminish accountability for misconduct by government lawyers. I believe that lawyers representing the United States should be held to the highest standards of ethics and professionalism. They must be subject to oversight by independent authorities like state bar associations; the Justice Department cannot be trusted to police itself. This proposed rule would allow the Attorney General to interfere with independent state bar investigations. That will greatly harm the integrity of our justice system and allow misconduct to go unpunished.

ACTION 2:

Last June, two teenage brothers from South Texas and their high school mariachi bandmates were invited to Capitol Hill and the White House for winning a state mariachi competition.  9 months later they and their family were imprisoned at the Dilley ICE detention center and threatened with deportation.  This Monday they were released following a visit by U.S. House members.  Among them was local Rep. Madeline Dean, who has been a leader in exercising Congressional oversight over ICE detention centers.

Today we write to thank Rep. Dean.  Adapt this sample text:

Dear Rep. Dean,

  Thank you for your leadership in standing against immoral and illegal ICE operations.

Sincerely,

<your name and zip code>
